As much as I absolutely adore Harry Potter, I'm not sure if we can consider it a "canonical" work. I think that books on the canon should be able to stand alone, and any one book in the Harry Potter series is deeply connected to those that come before it and after it. I also think Harry Potter has become too much of an icon to be considered a canonical work. It's too much a part of pop culture. However, keep in mind, I do have "The Golden Compass" on my list, so I am actually bit hypocritical haha. :)
ReplyDeleteI must admit Casey, I only know Angela's Ashes, Twelfth Night, and Harry Potter, but I do agree with Megan that HP is hard to add as part of a canon because, like she said, it's hard to stand alone.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad Angela's Ashes made your list. And I also put Harry Potter on mine...it's our own personal canons, after all, and I felt like the whole series, but any one of the books in particular, carried a great deal of weight because Harry Potter was such an epic part of my life, spanning about ten years. Maybe you feel the same? I felt like I just had to add it.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that I haven't read much of what is on your list, Casey... so I'm having trouble picking a work to argue with you about. :P I'm not sure how I feel about HP or Angela's Ashes... but I'm also not sure I disagree with you on them. I guess I'm surprised to see anything by Anne McCaffrey on anyone's list; I haven't read the work you named, but I've read other things by her and I was under the impression that she was a terrible writer; I can't really recall why I thought so, though. Certainly that doesn't mean much of anything (personal opinion, and a personal opinion formed when I was about 13 years old for that matter), but I guess I wrote her off as not worth my time a long time ago. Can you convince me to read this book? If you can, I promise I will.
