150 Word Comparison of Freire and Hooks

Paulo Freire discusses the idea of educating through a cyclical approach in his essay, The Banking Concept of Education. He explains that teachers should not just speak to their students, but engage them in the material being taught. If the teacher can recognize that they are learning as well, the class will flow more effectively. He states this saying, “ The teacher is no longer merely the one who teaches, but one who is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teach.” Bell Hooks in her essay, Toward a Revolutionary Feminist Pedagogy, speaks to the same notions as Freire, both agreeing that teacher dominated classrooms are invaluable to students. Hooks states that, “Education is the practice of freedom- as opposed to education as the practice of domination…” Both Freire and Hooks understand the value of teaching and more importantly the value of learning.

  1. Meghan,

You've done a good job of drawing out the authors' main points and comparing and contrasting the two theorists. There are two technical issues: "bell hooks" should not be capitalized, and essay titles should be in italics or quotations. Also, I think that your first line, using "cynical," is pretty close to evaluation rather than summary. You clearly understand the authors' points, however, and you've expressed them effectively. Nice job!
