Revision of My 100-Word Summary

In The New Advocacy and the Old, Gertrude Himmelfarb discusses the shift in academia from writing based on objectivity to writing based on subjectivity, or an autobiographical perspective. Himmelfarb’s point of view is that students are taking advantage of this shift, because they believe that this is the way writing has always been. Himmelfarb points out that the absence of any idea of truth and objective knowledge does not allow for educators to judge “scholarly merit” (88). Himmelfarb would argue that personal experience and the first-person pronoun, “I,” should be eliminated from all academic writing.
